Argentina

Argentina is located in the southernmost point of South America. With an area of nearly 3 million km2, it is the second largest country in South America, and the eighth in the world with a population of approximately 38 million.

The shear size of the country lends itself to a diversity of terroir particularly with the huge influence of the Andes. Cattle farming, mining and energy production rate amongst the larger industries in Argentina but Agriculture is by far the largest, so the rapid expansion into vine growing has been a natural and successful one. Although the rootstocks were introduced more than 400 years ago by Spanish settlers 15 years ago most restaurants, hotels and wine shops barely had one or two Argentinean wines. Now most have a selection of several varieties and some have 100% Argentine wines on their list, like Gaucho Grill

There are seven grape growing regions spreading from north to south, with different latitudes, altitudes and soils, which produce the most prestigious Malbec and Torrontes to be found in the international market, but many other varieties are grown including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Riesling, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Bonarda, Barbera, Petit Verdot, Tannat, and more. Nearly 50% of the vineyard area of Argentina is covered with red varieties with Malbec accounting for only 25% surprisingly, but this is the variety most consumers associate with Argentinean wine. Malbec was originally from Southern France, known as Côt and now even some French producers are putting Malbec on their labels due to its popularity!

Experimentation with vitis vinifera and the terroir is leading to some interesting and globally acceptable award winning wines. Yacochuya

In 1988 Dany and Michel Rolland were asked to be consultants to one of the oldest families in the valley of Calchaquie. There they discovered Cafayate, a true paradise for viticulture in the north-west of Argentina and they fell in love with the country, its culture, traditions and its people. Seduced by the remarkable potential of an old Malbec vine perched at an altitude of 6675 feet, Dany and Michel decided to put all their passion and savoir-faire to work with their Argentinean friends to produce the wine called Yacochuya. The 14 hectares of more than 60 years old vines, produce a rich, concentrated and powerful wine, which is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

Val de Flores

The small vineyard producing this wine is planted with Malbec vines more than fifty years old. It is situated at the foot of the Andean mountain range, at Vista Flores, South Mendoza. The view is breathtaking: row after row of vines bordered with rose bushes and olive trees, with snow-topped peaks in the background, all basking in wonderful sunshine under a vast, incredibly blue sky.
