Chateau La Grande Clotte
Another string in the mighty Michel Rolland bow, the grapes in this unique little vineyard of 1ha are the fruit of traditional white Bordeaux grape varieties planted in 1992 on a beautiful terroir in the commune of Lussac which only produced red wines in the Lussac-Saint Emilion appellation.
Traditional growing methods, manual leaf thinning and harvesting, rigorous selection on the vine and on the sorting tables, white wine vinification using the most rigorous techniques. Fermentation in new oak barrels, stirring the lees and bottling without fining result in a wine with good aromatic complexity, full and harmonious on the palate, golden, full of flavour and limited production.
La Grande Clotte is a steep-sloped limestone vineyard and most of its production is represented by a refined, generous Lussac Saint-Emilion made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. However, a tiny parcel is set aside for their Lussac-St-Emilion textured, exotic, stylish Bordeaux Blanc, a barrel-fermented blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon and 15% Muscadelle. An opportunity for Michel and Dany Rolland, great red wine specialists, to apply their talents as oenologists to make a white wine with respect for tradition, the first in this right bank region. Michel Rolland is possibly the best-known winemaker on the planet, achieving fame through his work with dozens of top estates around the world. He has run the family estate, Chateau Le Bon Pasteur, since 1978, and in the meantime, together with his oenologist wife, Dany, has progressively added other vineyards that have met their strict quality criteria. Some of these are joint ventures, where knowledge and resources are pooled.
