Ivica Matošević is one of the best and most energetic producers in Croatia. His domaine is located in the village of Krunčići in the Istria region of Croatia above the Lim Canal, some 15 km from Rovinj and a short drive from neighbouring Italy and Slovenia. Very much a self made man, Ivica started his domaine back in the nineties and quickly established it as one of the best Croatia has to offer. His drive and enthusiasm is definitely infectious! Matošević’s passion is Malvasia Istriana, a typical, local variety which in the Matošević domaine mainly comes from Bujstine vineyards in the northwest of Istria. This year the winery is celebrating their 18th birthday and to commemorate, they have issued a special book called ‘Barely Legal’!
The Alba Malvasia is made from 100% Malvasia Istriana and is a blend of different vineyards. It is fermented in stainless steel vats and aged on fine lees until the January following the harvest. It is a fresh and elegant wine with huge finesse, great minerality and fruit, with a savoury herbal finish and a touch of bitter almond. The Alba Antiqua is a selection of the best Malvasia grapes, produced only in exceptional years. It is aged in a combination of Istrian acacia barrels and French oak. Ivica believes that using acacia barrels could extend Malvasia’s longevity. With its pronounced mineral character and superb complexity and depth of flavours, Antiqua is the ultimate expression of Istrian Malvasia. The Grimalda white is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Istrian Malvasia and 25% Sauvignon Blanc, from the low yielding Brdo vineyard in Central Istria. It is aged for 12 months in allier/tronçais French oak barrels, with periodical sediment stirring. The Grimalda Red is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Teran and is aged for 15 months. This is made in a Bordeaux style, with marked freshness and minerality, but with a rustic, bramble character.
