New Zealand

New Zealand is a relative newcomer to the wine world but its rise in popularity has been dramatic, especially within the UK. Although blends do exist in New Zealand the main focus is on single varietals and expressing the characteristics of that individual grape variety. The Sauvignon Blanc grape variety, which is particularly suited to the Marlborough region, was the initial success story but Pinot Noir and other grape varieties are following suit, some with more success than others. However, Sauvignon Blanc is still the key varietal and more of this imported to the UK than any other country in the world.

There are considered to be 10 main wine growing regions within New Zealand, some with their own sub-regions - Marlborough, Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Gisbourne, Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury, Central Otago.

The climate of New Zealand is classic Maritime with obvious exposure to the surrounding seas. The effect of this is cooler nights which ensures the fruit grown is generally high in acidity which produces wines with a natural freshness. The wine growing regions are often in rain shadow areas and on the East side of the country away from the impaling rain and winds which hit the west coast.

Cloudy Bay

Cloudy Bay takes its name from a bay at the northern tip of the South Island named by Captain Cook in 1770.Cloudy Bay now has 60 hectares of vineyards planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay,Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Cloudy Bay also sources grapes from elsewhere in the Marlborough region. Cloudy Bay's staggering success can be attributed to its groundbreaking Sauvignon Blanc, as well as its distinctive labels, which reflect the skyline of the nearby Richmond Ranges. It is now owned by Veuve Clicquot.

Wild South

Wild South's range of classical varietal wines continues to capture the spirit and character of Marlborough. Each of the wines reflect winemaker Christie Brown's passion for cool climate winemaking by maximising varietal expression and complexity at the same time as over delivering on quality and value. The winery's estate vineyards, situated in the lower reaches of the Waihopai Valley, also play an important role in creating wines that capture the essence of Marlborough, with stony, fast draining alluvial soils; hot sunny days and cool dry nights. The Sauvignon Blanc is a fantastic example of the Marlborough style, with the intense aromatic aromas, lively acidity and mineral textures for which this region is renowned.
