John Platter Lauds Hartenberg & Cederberg in his 2010 Guide

Leading South African wine critic John Platter gives high ratings to both of our exclusive agencies Hartenberg Estate and Cederberg Private Cellar in his 2010 guide.
Hartenberg Estate, Stellenbosch
"'As good as it gets', cellar master Carl Schultz's description of the 2009 harvest, could easily be this dynamic family winery's pay-off line when it comes to recent forays into international markets and foreign awards received. Hot on the heels of a Decanter five-star rating and 90-plus scores from Wine Spectator for The Stork and Gravel Hill, the team signed up 14 new agents abroad, taking the export tally to 30 countries. Back in South Africa, they pulled out all the stops to open a new tasting area, imposingly set in the original underground cellar. This will be the venue for a FIFA World Cup programme of tastings and local food experiences." John Platter

Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
"Elegant but unyielding in youth, with taut tannin backbone, brisk acidity. 14.6% alc contained by dense fruit, clever oaking (18mths Fr, 60% new). Needs yr/2 to unfold." 4 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg Merlot 2007
"Aromas on 07 of violets & sugared plum contrast with its slightly warming, austere palate (14.5% alc). Shade less silky, seductive than 06. 17 mths oak (65% new)." 41/2 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg Gravel Hill Shiraz 2005
"Savoury 05 dusted with white pepper, packed with black olives; plush fruit wrapped around taut core, warming 14.5% alc farewell a minor detraction. All-new oaking. From ferrous-stone-on-clay vyd." 41/2 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg Shiraz 2006
"Acclaimed, highly polished stalwart; 06 with mulberry & vanilla oak notes (latter from 22mths 50% new Fr). Balanced alc (14.6% alc), supple, has a convincing presence without being overbearing." 41/2 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg The Stork Shiraz 2006
"From clay soils, typically more accessible than Gravel Hill. 06 elegant, understated despite 14.5% alc; ethereal St Joseph lily bouquet, dense cranberry core & regal tannins. 20mths new Fr oak. Will last 10 yrs plus, says Carl S." 5 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg The Mackenzie Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2006
"Just short of 05's finesse & polish, 06 is restrained, savoury, with cab's firm tannins; dollopd malbec, merlot add leafy/smoky notes to lavish but refined sweet fruit. 21mths new Fr oak." 41/2 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg Chardonnay 2008
"Fr brl-ferm/11mths (34% new). 08 marries creamy vanilla oak with brisk lemon aromas/flavours; hint mint savoury complexity on finish" 4 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg The Eleanor Chardonnay 2007
"Tightly wound 07, stately, restrained; needs few more yrs to blossom. Already a lingering creamy, lemony finish. Ferm/11mths new oak hinted at on palate." 41/2 stars, John Platter |
Hartenberg Weisser Riesling 2008
"Much loved, respected dry version. Fresh & lively 08 entices with candied almonds & emphatic lime, gently pithy texture." 4 stars, John Platter |
