“An exciting discovery for us this year, Château du Hureau is the best producer in Saumur-Champigny and produce award-winning wines. The Vatan family have been making wine in the Loire valley for 300 years and today is run by father and daughter team Philippe and Agathe Vatan. The Château du Hureau vineyards spread across 20 hectares in the Saumur-Champigny appellation and are organically and biodynamically farmed with very low yields. All grapes are hand-picked in successive pickings.

The Saumur Blanc Argile is produced from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes from the vineyard sites of Entre Deux Voies, Les Gruches and Saint Vincent, with an average vine age of 30 years. Yields are restricted to 30-40hl/ha and the wine is aged 6-12 months in vat and in barrel. This is a rich and aromatic wine with apricot, honey and spices on the nose. Rich and powerful on the palate, there is a delightful freshness and impressive length of flavour to this wine.

The Tuffe cuvee, so-called because of the “tuffeau” limestone rock on which the Cabernet Franc grapes grow, is a blend of 15 parcels from the Dampierre sur Loire, Souzay Champigny et Saumur regions. The grapes are sorted, macerated for 25-35 days and aged for 12-24 months. The wine is soft, rich and voluptuous. It is polished, perfumed with black cherry and cassis aromas. On the palate it is fresh and supple with a nice mouthfeel. A superb Cabernet Franc.
