20km from St. Emilion is the beautiful appellation of Montravel in AOC Bergerac, where, working with Bordeaux varietals, the Deffarge Danger family have been creating wines of ripeness and elegance since 1749. With two distinct soil types, they are perfectly suited to producing rich and structured Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec on the clay/limestone slopes, and aromatic and fresh Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle on the high plateau. The family is focused on quality and their wines express their variety and terroir. The elegance and purity of these wines are testament to their success in that.
The Sauvignon Blanc has a fresh grassy richness, clean pure fruit and a subtle complexity from lees aging making it perfect with or without food. The Merlot has ripe, dark, and plummy fruit with rich earthy tannins, a wonderful fruity palate with texture and balance and a fine clean finish. The Cuvee ‘Magie d’Automne’ Blanc is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Sauvignon Gris, 20% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle. This is a wonderfully complex wine, concentrated fruit with a delicious grassy freshness well complemented by the subtle spicy oak and lingering finish. Lastly the Cuvee ‘Magie d’Automne’ Rouge is a classic blend of 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec. It has a rich and dark nose leading onto a concentrated and powerful palate laden with dark fruit, chocolate and firm yet supple tannins giving superb structure. This is a wine of incredible poise and elegance.
