Kerrigan + Berry wines have been in the making for decades. Made by Michael Kerrigan and Gavin Berry, these wines represent the pinnacle of two careers spent crafting wines from some of the most respected vineyards of Western Australia. The wines are made from the highest quality grapes selected from the finest vineyards; their interpretation of the best of Western Australia.
The KERRIGAN of KERRIGAN+BERRY is Michael Kerrigan, otherwise known as Kegs. Owner and winemaker of Hay Shed Hill in Margaret River.
After excelling at winemaking studies at Roseworthy College in South Australia, Michael spent thirteen vintages as the winemaker for Howard Park and Madfish wines making wine from grapes grown in virtually every wine region in Western Australia but specializing in Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. In his time at Howard Park Michael received numerous accolades for the wines including nomination for Qantas Winemaker of the Year in 2003.
In late 2006 Michael and his partners, including Gavin, bought Hay Shed Hill in Margaret River. The opportunity to get involved with Hay Shed Hill was one that Michael could not let pass. “I knew the vineyard and always coveted the fruit, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to take ownership in a classic old pioneer vineyard in the elite of Margaret River but one which, for various reasons, had not quite realized it’s potential.”
“The only downside to making single vineyard estate wines from Hay Shed Hill is that there is no Riesling! I have a particular love of Riesling, especially from the Great Southern and really did miss it. I had also developed a special relationship with blending Great Southern and Margaret River Cabernet, they just marry so well – so after some liquid persuasion I convinced Gavin that KERRIGAN + BERRY was something that we should do. That was the full extent of the market research that went into these wines. We knew the regions, we knew the vineyards and the fruit – it was inevitable” Michael Kerrigan.
The BERRY side of KERRIGAN + BERRY is Gavin Berry. Gavin is the Managing Director (and chief Friday BBQ cook!) of West Cape Howe Wines in the Great Southern.
Gavin entered the wine industry at the ripe old age of 28 when a tour to the Swan Valley sparked an interest in wine making and within a few months found himself working his first vintage! He decided to follow his new found passion and study winemaking at Roseworthy College in South Australia. There he met Gill (now his wife and business partner) and together they worked a vintage in the Swan Valley (WA) and then in Gigondas (France) before making the move late in 1988, to Mt Barker (WA). Gavin took up the position as Assistant Winemaker at Plantagenet Wines, expecting to stay a year or two before moving on. However, he was to stay on at Plantagenet for 16 years and with Gill, established their “Mount Trio” vineyard in the picturesque Porongurup’s, near Albany. They built a beautiful mud-brick house, had a couple of kids, and well, the rest is history…
Gavin joined West Cape Howe as winemaker/director in early 2004 taking this brand to its current position as one of the most awarded and sought after Western Australian wine brands.
“I have never been much into marketing but I am very much into Riesling and good Cabernet so after the 3rd bottle of wine, Kegs convinced me that KERRIGAN + BERRY was a good idea. If it didn’t work then at least we would have some good wine to drink” Gavin Berry.
