2011 Produttori Riserva Barbaresco: “The greatest value in the realm of fine, cellar worthy reds” AG

“The Produttori’s Riservas remain some of the greatest values in the realm of fine, cellar worthy reds” Antonio Galloni

Today I am delighted to offer a selection of the 2011 Flagship Riserva wines from the outstand Produttori del Barbaresco – Having worked with the Produttori for a few years now, we have managed to secure access to a few remaining cases of these stunning Riserva wines.

In recent years the quiet transformation that has taken place at Produttori del Barbaresco is nothing short of remarkable. Far from a sleepy, old-fashioned cooperative winery, the Produttori have stepped up their game  – The wines remain reference-points, though, especially in years in which the Produttori make their flagship Riservas.

Managing Director Aldo Vacca describes 2012 as a year with poor weather during flowering, as a result, the Produttori did not bottle their Riservas in 2012. The 2011 vintage was also a warm one, yet the wines retained much of their personalities, amnd thus allow each of the vineyards to develop their signatures styles.

The three crus below each offer a very different proposition: First up is the Muncagota: This will offer delightful drinking straight off the bat and must be a consideration for the short to medium term. Next up is the Pora: This is a stunning wine in its youth, but also has the depth and complexity to age for many years to come. Finally I have a handful of bottles of the Montefico: A seriously dark and powerful wine, this will require some years in the cellar to come round but will reward those with the ability to resist pulling the cork too early!

My recommendation would be without a doubt a couple of cases of the Pora / Muncagota to enjoy over the next few years and then a Montefico for the long haul.

2011 Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva, Produttori del Barbaresco
Soft, caressing and voluptuous, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is the sweetest and most open of these 2011 Riservas. Hard candy, wild flowers, mint and sweet spices meld together in a sensual, inviting Barbaresco that will drink nicely pretty much upon release. The 2011 strikes an attractive middle ground of raciness, texture and structure. As such, it will be one of the best early drinkers in this range. This is a gorgeous Muncagota! – Drink 2016-2026″ 90 points, Antonio Galloni – vinous.com

2011 Barbaresco Pora Riserva, Produttori del Barbaresco
“The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is sweet, round and sensual. Beautifully layered in the glass, the Pora is absolutely exquisite, with plenty of sweet red cherry, plum, mint and spice notes woven throughout. The Pora is typically the most open of the Produttori’s nine Riservas, as it is once again this year. There is so much to like here! – Drink 2018-2031″ 92 points, Antonio Galloni – vinous.com

2011 Barbaresco Montefico Riserva, Produttori del Barbaresco
*Extremely Limited*
“The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is another of the highlights in this range from the Produttori. Imagine the precision of Ovello, but with slightly darker fruit and more density and power through the middle. That’s the Montefico. A regal, towering Barbaresco, the Montefico should provide thrilling drinking for the next several decades. A rush of dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco add nuance on the powerful, structured finish – Drink 2021-2036″ 95 points, Antonio Galloni – vinous.com
