2012 Il Poggione, Brunello di Montalcino: “This is one of the year’s best Brunello” ML

‘Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true’ Monica Larner

‘The straight Brunello remains one of the most reasonably priced, cellar-worthy wines on the planet’ Antonio Galloni

Il Poggione Brunello No Vintage

Many of you will recall the stunning 2010 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione… Well today I am delighted to offer the new 2012 vinatge from this wonderful estate. The 2010 was one of our most successful offer of the vintage (and now selling for £180+ 6 pack), given the price vs. 95+ score of the 2012 we feel this will once again be the undoubted  bargain of the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino releases.

This historic estate has been run by Franceschi family for over 100 years.  It may surprise a few of you, but it is only relatively recently that the famous Brunello di Montalcino appellation we know today has really sprouted. A whole rash of wineries swelled the numbers of the local Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino to 250 or more in the last decade or 2. However, we like a bit of tradition here at Bancroft and Il Poggione is a great case in point. Current owner Leopoldo Franceschi is the grandson of the man (also a Leopoldo) who was instrumental in setting up the aforementioned Consorzio and the current winemaking is overseen by the extraordinarily devoted Fabrizio Bindocci who has made it is his life’s mission to raise the status of the estate to the top  echelons and keep it there. Antonio Galloni has written enthusiastically that Fabrizio ‘has Sangiovese running through his veins’ and, as if mirroring the ownership lineage, he himself, is in the process of handing over the winemaking reins to his own son Alessandro. This will maintain continuity and oversee the progression of the estate and the enlightened classicism of its wines.  In doing so this great and symbiotic partnership between the Franceschis and Bindoccis is now in its 4th generation!

We at Bancroft are very keen to point out that The Il Poggione 2012 is going to be an absolute stunner and prices are sure to rise rapidly – As you see below Monica Larner is clearly a huge fan of this wine, as she has JUST awarded it a stunning 95+/100 point scoreSo now is the time to buy!

“Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true. From the second the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino pours into your glass, you know you are in for something special. The wine is darkly saturated and rich in appearance. Absent are those slightly amber or browning hues you often get with Sangiovese in a hot vintage. Nor does the wine show flat or tired characteristics. Instead, the quality of the fruit is vibrant and rich. This is a healthy, generous and exuberant Brunello with dark density and succulent fruit flavors that are followed by integrated spice and tobacco. The balance is impressive and one thing that you get here is fresh acidity. This is not to be underestimated, because the acidity quota in the 2012 vintage across the appellation is not as high, or evident as usual. This is one of the year’s best Brunello’s” Drink 2017-2030″  95+ points, Monica Larner erobertparker.com (March 2017)
