2016 Fontalloro, Fèlsina Berardenga: “The estate’s 2016’s are simply magnificent” AG

“The 2016 Fontalloro is the best vintage of this landmark wine that I have tasted thus far.” Monica Larner

98 point 2016 Fontalloro, Fèlsina Berardenga

Bancroft Tuscan favourite Fèlsina Berardenga has released the wonderful 98+ point 2016 Fontalloro.

As far as Chianti goes Fèlsina are pretty much the pinnacle of production. This estate can seriously hold its own with the best wines from Fontodi and Isole, as well as the very top Super Tuscans.

The estates flagship wine, Fontalloro is 100% Sangiovese blended from three different vineyards between the appellation of Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi, representing the best of both sides – powerful and structured with perfumes of spices, blackberries and tobacco. Labelled by Monica Larner as a “landmark vintage” for Fontalloro, this 2016 is destined for greatness.

Due to the slightly cooler July when compared to the 2015, this vintage has a slightly more precise, focused edge whilst maintaining a lovely fruit texture. This is a wine built for the long haul.

Every year Fèlsina consistently produce some of the very best value in Tuscany. When considering the amazing 98+ score, this is something not to be missed.

“The 2016 Fontalloro is the best vintage of this landmark wine that I have tasted thus far. This is a very elegant vintage, with more volume in the mouth and precise notes of tar, licorice, camphor ash, resin and Indian spice. In a race between the highly competitive 2015 and 2016 vintages, I give a slight advantage to this wine. The warmer 2015 vintage shows more richness and exuberant fruit. However, this wine from 2016 offers a more focused and chiseled delivery. I am hopeful that this wine will continue to evolve and sharpen as it ages in the bottle. This is a beautiful wine to put aside in your cellar for ten years or more – Drink 2021-2045” 98+ points, Monica Larner

“The 2016 Fontalloro is marked by vertical lift and a level of sheer structural intensity that is rare for this usually more sensual wine. Powerful, deep and also quite reticent, the 2016 is going to need a number of years before it starts drinking well. Even so, that it is a very special wine in the making is abundantly evident – Drink 2024-2046” 93-96 points, Antonio Galloni
