New Bancroft Agency: Herència Altés ‘A name to keep in mind for Terra Alta’ LG

‘Finding wine with this much clarity and precision is a tough job at double, and even triple the price’ Josh Reynolds

‘In Terra Alta, Herència Altés caught my attention with their subtle and balanced wines… this winery from Terra Alta was founded in 2010 is now on the list to follow’ Luis Gutiérrez

We first offered the 2013 La Serra wines back in 2015, well today I am delighted to announce that Bancroft are now the exclusive UK agents for the Herència Altés rangelaunching officially next weekSince it’s inception in 2010 the wines have started to attract attention from a number of world renowned wine critics: Both Robert Parker’s Spanish judge Luis Gutierrez and Josh Raynolds of Vinous.com are hugh admires of the estate.

The wines offered below showcase the very best of the Herència Altés range, they are a real testament to the heritage of the vineyards and strong family links to the area of the proprietors: Nùria Altés & Rafael De Haan. In 2010 they purchased the grapes from Nùria father and started to make quality wine under her family’s name – The Herència Altés brand was born. Since 2013 the wines have gone from strength, to strength and thanks to significant investment in new vineyard sites, a state of the art winery and barrel room. Alongside the iconic Languedoc-Roussillon wine consultant Claude Gros, Nùria & Rafael have produced a stunning set of wines in 2015 vinatge.

Vineyards The incredible vineyards of Benufet and La Serra contain some of the oldest vines in Terra Alta – At well over 100 years old. La Serra, in particular, with 11 hectares of vines, is unlike any other in Terra Alta and has only survived to this day because of a sequence of family circumstances that culminated in the purchase of the vineyard in 2013. Of the 11 hectares, some 6 are Garnatxa Blanca, 2 are Cariñena and half a hectare Garnatxa Negra. The remaining vines are Macabeo and an assortment of other varieties. The main soil type of Terra Alta is Panal, which is rich in limestone and has very little organic matter. The top-soil appears to be sandy but just below lies the Panal that retains moisture  very well and finds itself resting on the ‘mother rock’ which is pure limestone. The altitude of the vineyards (450m above sea level) and the constant breeze results in a natural freshness in these wines. The whites are amazingly crisp, with a tell-tale mineral tanginess from the limestone even with perfect ripeness levels achieved, and the reds remain lively and fresh with great intensity and concentration.

The Winery – The new Herència Altés winery encompasses an area of 4400 m2, most of which is submerged to minimize the impact on the landscape and also achieve greater thermal efficiency, thereby lowering energy use. The winery relies almost entirely on solar power and continues the commitment to lowering environmental impact by recycling rainfall for use throughout the facility. The new barrel room is completely subterranean and is fully temperature controlled throughout the year. Their priority is to age the wines slowly over a long period of time and to impart on them only a very subtle oak influence.

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy this seriously enjoyable range of  Terra Alta wines – Each offering something different to the other, and a real sense of the individual vineyard sites from which the grapes are grown.

We are extremely excited about our new agency and are confident that you will really enjoy these authentic Spanish wines from the lovely Terra Alta region.
