The 2019 Penfolds Collection Release – Penfolds 175th Anniversary Year: “A powerhouse of concentration and complexity” JS

We are delighted to offer you a selection from the much anticipated 2019 Penfolds Collection release which includes the magnificent 2015 Grange, awarded 100 points by James Suckling.

Amongst the highest scores from this release, these wines were our favourites from the launch tasting in London hosted by Peter Gago which celebrated Penfolds 175th year. We were deeply impressed by the quality and the breadth of the Penfolds range – the wines were a testament to the incredible heritage and passion of this historic and forward thinking estate.

Apart from the new release, we are able to offer some 2016 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon and a small parcel of 2015 and 2016 Yattarna Chardonnay which you will see below. These were highly sought-after wines on release and we are fortunate to have discovered a few extra cases.

2015 Grange, Penfolds

“Much anticipated vintage for Grange and it is a powerhouse of concentration and complexity. Aromas of orange and lemon peel to start, then graphite, blackberries, plum paste, black cherries, boundless sweet oak spice, fresh cedar, tar, mahogany, roasted coffee and chocolate – the list goes on. Such complexity. Classic Grange, offering such deep, dark intensity. The palate has immense richness and depth with a super succulent and very long, fleshy, deeply weighted array of dense, velvet-wrapped tannins that run so long. The fruit flavors sit in the blackberry, blood-plum and blueberry zone with succulent, long and assertive structure, carrying through in an utterly seamless mode. The finish is tightly wrenched, in spectacularly powerful style, locking this wine in for a very long haul. Best from 2030” 100 points, James Suckling

2017 Bin 798 RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz, Penfolds

“Stunning blueberries and mulberries here with a wealth of baking spices and red berries, as well as tarry notes and blackberries. It is all here. The palate has a super plush, rich and quite compressed tannin feel. Some firm and powerful moments, as the palate builds with plentiful spiced summer berries. Red plums and blackberries to close. 2016 St Henri Shiraz, Penfolds

“This is a much anticipated vintage for St. Henri, and it does not disappoint. The complexity of fruit here is stunning, together with a very complex and playfully fragrant, spicy edge with graphite, roasted coffee and woody spices, framing a core of very fresh blackberries, red and dark cherries and blueberries. So fresh and brimming with fruit aromas. The palate has a stunning array of deeply fleshy fruit flavors with a superb sense of length and powerful, ripe tannin, underpinning vibrant, fleshy fruit that is beautifully assembled in a refined, elegant and impressively pure mode. So long and pure. Silky and elegant. A real masterpiece, taking its place among the finest vintages like 2010, 1990 and 1971. 95% shiraz and 5% cabernet sauvignon. 2018 Bin A Reserve Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, Penfolds

“This delves into a very rich and attractive place with such intense lemon and ripe-peach character on offer. The palate has a taut, composed and very linear feel with super intense and seamless texture. Acidity wraps the finish tight. Pithy resolve here. Drink or hold” 96 points, James Suckling

2016 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, Penfolds

“The scents of Indian ink and vivid, new American oak take center stage, followed by redcurrant, blackcurrant and meaty aromas, as well as a sanguine, iodine edge. The palate confirms the sense that this needs a good rest. Deep and dense, the attractively chewy tannins are draped in rich, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant flavors. This is a vibrant wine, with significant tannin layering that needs to rest a little. Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills fruit sourcing. 20 months in new American-oak hogsheads. 2016 Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay, Penfolds

“A restrained nose with chamomile, white pepper, lemon zest and lime juice all here. This has an edge of wet chalk and oyster shell, too. Very cryptic and tightly held for now. The palate is wrapped in honeycomb, revealing a core of white-peach, green-melon and yellow-grapefruit flavors. Smooth, rolling and flowing texture. Rich and long. Tasmania, Henty, Adelaide Hills and Tumbarumba fruit sourcing. Drink or hold” 96 points, James Suckling

2015 Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay, Penfolds

“A much-anticipated vintage for Yattarna and it does not disappoint, showing very impressive depth and sheer fruit power. It has devoured the oak, there’s a deep citrusy core to the palate that really hinges on yellow grapefruit. It teases with subtle bitterness in a way that a great chef fine tunes a great dish, sapid, dense and very very assertive. Drink now” 98 points, James Suckling
