“Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar” Neal Martin
97 point 2010 La Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva
There’s one property in Rioja that has consistently released outstanding Gran Reservas at an affordable price: La Rioja Alta.
Based in the western Alta sub-region of Rioja, alongside other top names such as Muga and Murrieta, their wines destined to age, with the power and structure of to last decades.
2010 was an excellent vintage in most of Europe and Rioja was no exception. Tim Atkin has given this year’s release 97 points, a point higher than 2009, saying ‘A step up on the memorable 2009, this shows just how special the 2010 vintage was…focused, balanced and graceful with the concentration and backbone to age.’
No notes have yet been released from other critics but this is sure to hit high scores with everyone and is likely to sell out well before they come out. Neal Martin’s comment above was made when tasting the 1998 vintage, alongside which he tasted the 1964 and commented, ‘It does taste like a great old Burgundy, but the harmony, freshness and complexity is one of the finest I have encountered on any Spanish wine. This is a wine made of dreams.’
“A step up on the memorable 2009, this shows just how special the 2010 vintage was. Marrying fruit from Briñas, Villalba and Rodezno, it’s a perfectly judged marriage of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano. Savoury wild herb notes segue into a palate that’s focused, balanced and graceful with the concentration and backbone to age. 2019-35” 97 points, Tim Atkin
