2013 Vin de Constance: “This is awesome” NM

The 2013 vintage has been one of success, its superb now but also has decades of aging ahead – The 2nd Best VDC Ever!

96 point 2013 Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia

Given how particular they are each year about whether or not to produce a vintage, every release from Klein Constantia is truly momentous. The latest, 2013, has now been reviewed by Neal Martin who is effusive in his praise and reaffirming it as one of the world’s greatest sweet wines.

Although Vin de Constance nurtures its incredible history – there aren’t many wines that survive from the 17th century and appear in the works of Dickens, Baudelaire and Austen – it is clear that things are only moving onwards and upwards at Klein Constantia. After its resurrection in the 1980s (following a century of dormancy after phylloxera destroyed the vineyards), the estate has gone from strength to strength and Klein Constantia’s new owners have invested heavily in its infrastructure, vineyards and equipment with the firm intention of taking its wines to an even higher level.

2013 Vin de Constance, Klein Constantia
“It has a beautiful bouquet with honey, quince, pressed yellow flowers and Mirabelle. It has wonderful definition and purity. The palate is very well balanced with a mellifluous texture and beautifully judged acidity as it just sashays along. It fans out on the finish with honey, quince, a touch of rhubarb and ginger, extraordinarily persistent in the mouth. Matthew Day, current winemaker, opined that he thought the 2012 would be the best ever, but the freshness might see it overtaken – This is awesome!” 96 points, Neal Martin
